Actuación de mejora de eficiencia energética mediante instalación fotovoltaica, financiada por la Unión Europea – NextGenerationEU.

En Apartamentos Villa Canaima, ubicados en Matagorda, Puerto del Carmen (Lanzarote), hemos llevado a cabo la instalación de un sistema de energía solar fotovoltaica, reforzando nuestro compromiso con la sostenibilidad y la eficiencia energética.

La actuación consiste en la instalación de paneles solares fotovoltaicos en cubierta, junto con los equipos técnicos asociados, tales como inversor, cuadros eléctricos, protecciones y sistema de autoconsumo, permitiendo la generación de energía limpia para su uso en las propias instalaciones.

Gracias a esta instalación fotovoltaica en Lanzarote, reducimos el consumo de energía convencional y avanzamos hacia un modelo energético más sostenible, disminuyendo las emisiones de CO₂ y contribuyendo a la transición energética.

Este proyecto se enmarca dentro del Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia, financiado por la Unión Europea – NextGenerationEU, y tiene como objetivo la mejora de la eficiencia energética en establecimientos turísticos.

La instalación se encuentra plenamente operativa y visible en Apartamentos Villa Canaima, formando parte de las mejoras implementadas para ofrecer a nuestros clientes un alojamiento más eficiente, sostenible y respetuoso con el entorno.

October 31st and November 1st bring a fascinating mix of celebrations to the Canary Islands, where local tradition and modern festivity meet in a meaningful way. While Halloween has made its way to our shores with costumes, pumpkins, and spooky decor, here in the Canaries, we have our own twist – Noche de Finaos.

Noche de Finaos, celebrated on October 31st, is a deeply rooted tradition that was nearly forgotten but is now experiencing a vibrant revival across the islands. Families come together to honor loved ones who have passed, sharing stories of their finaos (a term for the departed), and enjoying treats like roasted chestnuts, nuts, and sweets, sometimes with a glass of local wine. It’s a beautiful way to reconnect with past generations and celebrate family and community warmth.

On November 1st, Spain observes All Saints' Day, a time for families to visit cemeteries, decorate graves with flowers, and reflect on the memory of their loved ones. In the Canaries, this day complements Noche de Finaos, creating a heartfelt balance between celebration and remembrance.

Villa Canaima Apartments: Glow-Up Edition 2023 - Where Maintenance Became a Comedy Show

Hey there, fabulous guests and future visitors! It's your favourite family-run tourist accommodation in Lanzarote, and oh boy, do we have a tale to spin! During the temporary closure for maintenance work at Villa Canaima Apartments, we decided to add some pizzazz and mischief – brace yourself for the quirkiest and funniest rollercoaster ride!

1. A Whimsical White Canvas: Armed with paintbrushes and a sprinkle of madness, we embarked on a "Cesar Manrique meets Picasso" adventure! Our building turned into a whimsical white canvas, as if the whole neighbourhood decided to throw a party where everyone was invited to paint the town white!

Hey, sometimes a splash of white is all it takes to create a fresh and clean look that brightens up everything around. Cesar Manrique and Picasso would have been proud of our artistic endeavours!

2. Pool Drama: Our pool went all diva on us and demanded a "splashy rebellion!" So, we pampered it like royalty with a spa day, complete with cucumber eye masks (yes, we snatched some for ourselves too – shh!).

3. "Legi-what?" Legionella! Fear not, dear guests, we were armed and ready for a germ-fighting showdown! We hosted a "Legionella party," where our pipes, faucets, and water tanks strutted their stuff in a dazzling hygiene dance-off!

4. Balcony Revamp Extravaganza: Out with the old and in with the chic! We transformed our balconies into a runway-worthy spectacle, giving our railings a sleek glass makeover. Now they're so stylish, even the pigeons can't help but strut their feathers!

5. The Smart Lock Saga: Our doors wanted in on the tech revolution! We gave them a "Smart Locks 101" crash course, and now they're having a blast chatting with guests – but watch out, they've got a stash of knock-knock jokes up their hinges!

6. Drainage Drama Queens: Our drainage pipes decided to unleash their inner drama queens! Clogging up at the most inconvenient times, they demanded attention. So, we threw a "plumbing party" and learned the "Drainage Shuffle" while fixing them up!

7. A Dig with a Twist: Ground-floor apartments buried in the garden had a secret passion – being dirt divas! We treated them to an exterior wall spa day, making sure they were fabulous and moisture-free, because divas deserve the best!

8. The Fumigation Fiesta: Critters invaded, so we threw them a "Critter Carnival!" Bugs rocked tiny party hats while mosquitoes tried limbo dancing (and failed miserably!). Our deep fumigation sent them scurrying away like they were auditioning for a bug ballet!

You know how it is with maintenance work – surprises around every corner! But fear not, we're dedicated to turning your stay into a laughter-filled escapade!

INTENSE PLEASURE

One of the joys of flying to Lanzarote is that final two-hour stretch when all you can see from the window of the plane is sea, sky and maybe a few clouds. It can feel like a bit of a haul, but there’s no doubt you’re going somewhere far away, a place where the sun never stops shining.

And then it appears, a strange, beautiful little island, knobbly with volcanoes, surrounded by surf and beaches. It passes swiftly beneath the wings before that final swing round and you’re zooming low over the water towards the shore.

That first blast of warm Canarian air as you leave the plane is always memorable, but last month I flew back from Greece and realised it can also be a relief from the intense, stifling heat other parts of Europe experience. Heat that saps your energy and makes you itchy and irritable, that just makes you want to hide away in shady room with a fan.

We rarely get that kind of heat here. It’s never humid and sweaty, there’s usually a breeze and even when it gets really hot, you’re never far from a beach, a pool or a lagoon to cool off in. There’s always sweet relief – a shady corner an ice cold drink, a moment of pure relaxation.

But August on Lanzarote is also all about activitythere are hundreds of things to do and see, the resorts will be buzzing and the joyful sound of traditional fiestas will never be too far away. It’s an intense month of undiluted pleasure – enjoy!

A sports event that has brought so much joy to our island, which was the driving force behind the current sports tourism that we receive and which is organized by Club La Santa, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Tías Town Hall.

As you already know, this sporting event is the most important of those held on the island due to its toughness and its international importance. Each triathlete has to face 3.8 km. swimming, 180.2 km. of bicycle and 42.2 km. of marathon.

For the convenience of competitors and to reduce inconvenience to road users, the busiest sections will be signposted and beaconed, as well as movement restrictions will be established at specific points, during the cut-off times established by the organization, depending on the anticipation of the passage of competitors.

From the organization it is recommended to take into account the informative posters prior to the event, as well as schedule the routes and destinations with the best forecast, in order to avoid retentions.

For this, we share with you the traffic cuts that will take place that day, so that the services that are affected can organize alternatives. The following table shows the highways of the municipality that will suffer cuts and their schedules:

The entrances and exits of Puerto del Carmen will be made by the LZ 505 (Tias) and LZ 504 (Macher).

Avenue of the Beaches:

On Thursday, May 18, from 7:00 a.m., the section of the Avenue between Guanapay Street and Cesar Manrique Street.

On Friday the 19th, from 1:00 p.m. to Saturday the 20th; the section of the Avenue between Cesar Manrique Street and Pedro Barba Street.

On the day of the IRONMAN (Saturday 20), from 6:00 a.m. to Sunday 21, the section of Avenida de las Playas from Pedro Barba street to the Hotel Jameos Playa.

In the municipality of Yaiza, specifically in Playa Blanca:

The exits from Playa Blanca will be by Femes LZ 702, for general traffic and by the service road for buses and residents of Yaiza and El Golfo.

The entrance to Playa Blanca, Yaiza, El Golfo and Las Breñas will be by Femés via LZ 702, except for buses and heavy vehicles, which will make a "by pass" through the interior of Yaiza and the service road to Playa Blanca.

Timanfaya National Park will be closed to traffic from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In the municipality of Tinajo:

Traffic will be closed on LZ 56, (Tinguatón – La Geria), from 08:30 to 18:30; therefore, retentions can occur at the height of the Monument to the Peasant.

In the municipality of Teguise:

Traffic will be closed at LZ 30, (Mozaga - La Villa), LZ 10 (La Villa - Haría) and at LZ 404, Guatiza - La Villa.

The nucleus of La Villa will have its exit and entrance, controlled by agents or auxiliaries, at the crossroads between the Majuelo and the Cementerio road.

In the municipality of Haría:

The highways LZ 10 (Haría – Los Valles), LZ 201 and LZ 202, (Haría – Mirador del Rio) and LZ 203, (Mirador del Rio – Arrieta), will be closed to traffic, where there will be a crossing controlled by auxiliaries and they can produce retentions to the in the LZ 1 between Arrieta and Mala.

The scientific community describes a new marine species in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote: Lomanotus tias

The incredible marine biodiversity of the Puerto del Carmen coastline has a new member and our municipality bears its name.

It is not usual for a new species to bear the name of the town where it was discovered and the authors of the scientific article, Jesús Ortea (BOS Department, University of Oviedo) and Leopoldo Moro (Biodiversity Service of the Government of the Canary Islands) argue so in etymology:

"Dedicated to the Municipality of Tias, for its commitment to publicize and raise awareness about the importance of conserving the Cagafrecho Special Conservation Zone, through the ZEConsciente Project."

Yes, our ZEConsciente project that gives us so much joy and of which we are so proud, in which the environment, culture and tourism areas of this council are working very hard; has just received a very special recognition from the scientific community. It is an honor for us that this new sea slug bears the name of our municipality.

Behind this discovery there are more than 40 years of constant and meticulous work inventorying the sea slugs of the Canary Islands and species of the genus Lomanus Verany, 1844 had never been collected. The material studied in this work was collected by Dennis Rabeling, a RedPROMAR collaborator, using autonomous diving techniques with underwater photographs of the animal in its habitat. At the end of November of last year Dennis found two specimens of 2 and 1.8 mm long by 1 mm wide collected at 6 m. deep between tussock red algae with sediments.

This discovery is the result of the cooperative efforts of many citizens, it is a good example of the usefulness of regular and continuous sampling through Citizen Science, an initiative promoted by the Network of Observers of the Canary Islands Marine Environment (RedPROMAR). Observers such as Dennis Rabeling who, as the authors of the paper report: "with his enthusiasm, perseverance and desire for knowledge, has exponentially increased the inventory of marine biota of the ZEC ES7011002 "Cagafrecho" that bathes the coast of the Municipality of Tías". BURSTING INTO LIFE

Lanzarote will turn green in more ways than one this month, as springtime arrives on an island that will be buzzing from start to finish.

Rains in February may have put the damper on a few holidays, but they also mean that the island will be dressing up in greenery for March. Every few years we also get a beautiful display of wild flowers, whose delicate colours light up all sorts of unexpected corners of the island, and the conditions are perfect for such a show right now.

It’s a wonderful time to get out to Lanzarote’s countryside and see the brief but unforgettable way the island can burst into breath-taking beauty.

Also dressing up in green will be hundreds of islanders celebrating St Patrick’s Day. This has become a special event on Ireland’s favourite holiday destination, and you can guarantee that the music will be playing, the Guinness will be flowing and the craic will be mighty.

But that’s not all. Carnival parades in Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, Haría and Tinajo will bring more rhythm, noise, colour and joy to the island, while the Hindu festival of Holi will also return.

The March events also remind us of a more painful anniversary. Three years ago, a two-week lockdown was announced two days before St Patrick’s Day. Those 14 days would become six weeks, and an island that relies on tourism faced its biggest challenge in recent history, with travel restrictions that endured until last year.

Now, the resorts are full, the island is starting to boom again and, if all goes well, this will be the first normal March we’ll be experiencing for four years. Let’s celebrate it with heart and soul.

Lanzarote FEBRUARY CARNIVAL DATES

This year’s carnival season will be the first fully unrestricted one for four years, so get those masks on and get ready to party! Here’s the dates you need to know

Carnival is a Canarian obsession. That’s because these islands do it better than the rest of Spain, bringing Latin American style and vivacity to an event that was banned and suppressed for many years.

Carnival Dates:

ARRECIFE GRAND PARADE MONDAY FEBRUARY 20TH, 6PM.

Arrecife’s parade is always the first and biggest on the island, and nobody wants to miss it. It gathers near the football stadium/bus station from 5pm on and the whole gloriously chaotic explosion of noise and colour heads off towards the Cabildo at about 6pm.

SAN BARTOLOMÉ GRAND PARADE TUESDAY FEBRUARY 21ST.

San Bartolomé holds its own carnival parade on Shrove Tuesday, a public holiday on most of the island.

ARRECIFE, BURIAL OF THE SARDINE SEAFRONT. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND.

How does Arrecife mark the end of carnival? That’s obvious – by making a gigantic fish out of papier maché then holding an immense funeral parade for it before burning it on the beach.

PUERTO DEL CARMEN GRAND PARADE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH FROM 6PM.

Puerto del Carmen’s seafront route is one of the prettiest on the island, frequently taking place in front of a gorgeous sunset. It’s always popular with tourists. There’ll be further parades over the following weekends, and we’ll bring you full details in our March issue.

JULY’S MIRACLE

If you want to understand the miracle of Lanzarote wine, first head to Timanfaya. That’s where you’ll get an idea of the immensity of the eruptions that created this violent yet beautiful landscape. It’s a beautiful but harsh, hostile environment where you’ll see very little life.

Then head to La Geria, where rolling hills of black volcanic ash are covered in thousands of horseshoe-shaped walls, like the scales of a fish. Each wall protects a pit; and each pit contains a small woody vine that could easily be older than you.

And this month, you can see the miracle happening under each of those vines – a heavy pile of luscious golden grapes. It seems amazing that such a small plant could produce such bounty, but there it is, in the bottom of each pit, in front of your eyes.

These grapes are just the start of the miracle, though. They’ll be picked, washed, pressed and the juice fermented, resulting in millions of bottles of wine. Some of this wine will find its way half-way round the world; much more will stay right here on Lanzarote.

On Lanzarote, wine is for everybody. It’s the fuel for many of the fiestas that will take place all over the island this summer – fiestas that are likely to be even more joyous after two years of suspension; it’s the eternal accompaniment to those long, lazy meals that are so important to life on the island, and it’s a simple way of life for several hundred farmers and winemakers here.

This month we raise a glass to Lanzarote wine, an industry that is becoming more exciting and innovative every year, and which is also becoming more and more important to tourism, as thousands of visitors decide to learn more about this unique miracle for themselves.
